Institute of Applied Language Studies

The Institute of Applied Language Studies offers courses in English, German, French, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese and Dutch, as well as Czech as a foreign language. The students of the University of West Bohemia can study languages either for general use or for specific purposes and professional communication. The Institute exists to improve the language competencies of the university graduates in order to enhance their competiveness on the European labour market. The Institute of Applied Language Studies cooperates with professional European language organizations and participates in discussions about the future of language education in Europe and about the standardization of language examinations. The Institute is also involved in projects focused on the improvement of language education.



Jana Cepickova has been involved in teaching English since 1998. She has taught at different types of institutions. Currently she teaches technical English at the University of West Bohemia in Plzen, Czech Republic. She is interested in blended learning and developing teaching materials for students of engineering. In addition, she has published teaching materials for both general and technical English.




Jeremy King has been teaching English as a foreign language in the Czech Republic since 1998. From 2002-2004 he taught English, including business English, at British Council Pilsen. Since 2004 he has been responsible for English language skills of staff and PhD students at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. Duties include helping students and staff with preparing presentations and research papers for conferences.
